JMA carries out spectral and broadband observations of UV-B radiation. In the spectral observation, dispersed ultraviolet radiation through a diffraction grating is measured spectrally using a photomultiplier tube at 0.5 nm intervals within the wavelength of 290–325 nm every hour from sunrise to sunset using a high-precision Brewer spectrophotometer. In the broadband UV-B observation, the total amount of global UV-B radiation is measured using a broadband UV-B radiometer.
