JMA observes Kosa (Aeolian dust) at 67 meteorological stations as of 31 December 2009 (Fig. 7.1.3.1). The observation can be carried out at manned stations only, the number of which has decreased as stations become unmanned. In order to monitor appropriately long term trends of Kosa events, statistical analyses are based on observational data only from those stations that carry out the observation at the time of statistics.
